Click this link for detailsAlia Bhatt tries her best and gives it her all, but is never completely able to rise above the mischievous, flighty Ganga into the angst-ridden Gangubai who transforms into a political activist and social reformer for the women of Kamathipura. The script doesn’t support her with the gravitas required of someone of her stature.

4. India Today -
Rating Score -> 3.5/5
Click this link for detailsGangubai Kathiawadi’s camera work, background score and dialogues are the three pillars that take it from being just another gutsy biopic to a film that creates a massive impact. Gangubai is a solid risk for both Bhansali and Alia. A risk that pays off beautifully for both the director and his muse.
5. Hindustan Times -
Rating Score -> n/a
Click this link for detailsAlia Bhatt, who showed her acting prowess in Highway as her second film itself, has given a superlative performance as Gangubai. Yes, she does look a little too young at times for this roles but strong voice, the way she walks, the confidence she exudes from her smile, the pain she carries in her eyes --- Alia puts together quite an impressive show. Her nearly perfect diction, dialect, expressions and how she emotes anger, rage, happiness and helplessness leave you in awe of her screen presence.
6. Indian Express -
Rating Score -> 3/5
Click this link for detailsAlia Bhatt makes this Sanjay Leela Bhansali spectacle real. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s latest is the kind of old-fashioned dialogue-heavy, sentiment-on-sleeve film which Bollywood is forgetting how to make.
7. Times of India -
Rating Score -> 3.5/5
Click this link for detailsIf you’re seeking a real peek into Gangubai’s life, also known as Mumbai’s Mafia Queen, then you will be left yearning for more. But even with whatever is packed into this drama, there are enough moments that will draw you into this world where nights seem endless and the lights never fade.
8. Rediff -
Rating Score -> 3.5/5
Click this link for detailsThis is Alia Bhatt's show though, one hundred percent. Like all of Bhansali's Gujju girls, Nandini and Leela, Gangubai is a livewire, a fountain of passionate impulses. Alia looks like Nanda in Prem Rog, but there is Amitabh Bachchan's swagger in her head-on attitude and Rekha's oomph in her saucy seduction.
9. Outlook India -
Rating Score -> 3/5
Click this link for detailsIf you’re not too much into historical accuracies and are willing to watch this movie purely as a story that is loosely based on the real-life Gangubai, and not fully based on her, then you’re bound to have a great time watching the film. It’s a definite Must Watch. Maybe, for the historic connoisseurs, this is a movie that can be skipped.
10. DNA -
Rating Score -> 4/5
Click this link for detailsSanjay Leela Bhansali's film is a glossy version, engrossed in the accomplishments of Gangubai, for whom each door opens with absolute ease. But that doesn't mean that the plot is weak, the story uninspiring or the film lacks intensity and material. No. The film's narrative is such that you will empathise with Gangu, root for her and cheer for her with every small victory, but never pity her.
11. Komal Nahta -

Click this link for detailsOn the whole, Gangubai Kathiawadi is a definite box-office winner. It is a superb human drama which will do well, more so in the big cities and multiplexes. The film holds special appeal for the ladies. It has the potential to do hit business in some circuits.
12. Anupama Chopra -

Click this link for detailsDespite the violence – emotional and physical – that Gangubai endures, she remains a poet at heart, almost as though she is the cinematic descendent of Meena Kumari from Pakeezah. In one scene, she expounds on the various shades of white in the sarees she wears – white, she says, can be the color of chand, badal, baraf, doodh, namak.
13. NDTV -

Click this link for detailsWomen of the world's oldest profession plying their trade and fighting for justice in Bombay's Kamathipura in Nehruvian times are the subject of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi. The period drama is, however, crafted meticulously not so much for factual accuracy as for effect. The result is an immersive film that does not feel overly stretched even though it runs a little over two and a half hours.
14. News 18 -
Rating Score -> n/a
Click this link for detailsGangubai Kathiawadi is a glossier version of Gangubai’s own accomplishments to portray her struggles as a real person, sacrificing them for the sake of palatability. It is also shown that things come really easy for her and every hurdle is passed without any hesitation. This is a seriously slow and steady film, although slightly scattered, but stunning all the same. If you’re expecting the roar and rumblings of a regular Bollywood film, this one is far from it. But therein lies the beauty of it.
15. The Week -
Rating Score -> 3/5
Click this link for detailsOn the whole, it is a laudable effort, though not quite a masterpiece. Alia takes on the most challenging role of her career with elan. The supporting cast is strong and the quality of production demands it to be seen on the big screen. So, do not wait till it starts streaming.
