On the whole, Sooryavanshi is a super-hit film, no questions asked! It will bring the industry, adversely affected by the 19 months of lockdowns, back on track in a big way. It will easily touch the Rs. 250-crore mark and may even surpass that as it will succeed in bringing the public back to the cinemas after the long ‘interval’.

After Singham Returns and Simmba, it was evident that Rohit Shetty's cop actioners were in dire need of a bit of policing themselves. The fourth in the series, Sooryavanshi, attempts a course correction. The results are at best middling. Some parts of the film are solid, others rather starchy.

An absolute entertainer, with a few hiccups in between, ‘Sooryavanshi’ is definitely the best film in the Rohit Shetty cop universe that began in 2011 with Ajay Devgn as a no-nonsense cop in ‘Singham’, continued with its sequel three years later and presented Ranveer Singh in an all-new avatar with ‘Simmba’ in 2018.

Sooryavanshi is not a three-hero film as the posters and trailers might try to make you believe. It's an out-and-out Akshay Kumar action film with special appearances from Ajay Devgn, who plays Singham, and Ranveer Singh, who plays Simmba, in the last 30 minutes. These 30 minutes are the film's highlight with its high-octane action, cars getting blown up, some stunning hand combat choreography taken to a new level, and the action-hero trio in their best form.

It is pure big screen entertainment, something that truly works right through its near two and a half hour duration. Sooryavanshi is one of those movies where even if you snooze off midway you can bet you will still wake up to bullets flying and cars on fire. If your idea of entertainment is guns blazing, road chases, ‘hero’ cops bumping off terrorists with not a care for collateral damage, and an item number from the lead actress, then Sooryavanshi is all for you. And if you a true blue mass entertainer fan and haven’t had a fill of what you just sat through for the past 2 and a half hours, there is a hip-thrusting, chest-thumping, handshaking, dance number from the three cop heroes as the credits roll, you don’t want to miss.

Sooryavanshi works hard to be an entertainer that can also somehow deliver key messaging about the tragic consequences of religious hate, the undying spirit of Mumbai and the unstinting bravery of Mumbai’s cops but the storytelling sags under the load. At one point, the plot pauses to allow for a romantic flashback – Sooryavanshi and his wife Ria are getting steamy as they sing Tip Tip Barsa Pani ata fair ground. Akshay sang the same song twenty-sevenyears ago in Mohra with Raveena Tandon. Katrina Kaif looks smashing but this sequence is oddly dispiriting. It reiterates that in Bollywood, the more things change, the more they remain the same – literally.

Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif starrer Sooryavanshi is a proper 'paisa vasool' film. Indeed, there could not have been any other way for the audience to come back to the theatres. However, the storyline of the Rohit Shetty directorial is not unique as we hear the news of terrorist attacks every day in different parts of the country, but when it comes to Mumbai, 93 blasts or 26/11 of 2008, people can never forget the story.

And after you’ve had too much of it, you wonder what happened to the other two star attractions?  But then, it’s a Rohit Shetty film, in which cars have to fly, bodies butchered and many chase sequences merrily borrowed from Hollywood‘s hugely successful films.
