Overall Word of Mouth (Critics) - Positive!

Rating Score -> 2.5/5
The best part though, and for which the film truly deserves a medal, is its choosing to steer clear of chest-thumping, flag-waving, ugly jingoism. In a throwaway line, the girl who wanted to be pilot says: I only want to fly. Could the film have been better? Undoubtedly. Women following their dreams against patriarchal odds? Absolutely.

More than anything else, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl is a deeply moving tale of a feminist father and his feisty daughter. It wages war against patriarchal mind-set and discrimination, and identifies it as a bigger threat to progress than the one we perhaps tackled in 1999.

Gunjan in the film is what many might describe as a Mary Sue -- a slightly outdated term used to describe a character who is implausibly skilled, even within the realms of fiction.There is no obstacle Gunjan can’t cross by simply tapping into her reserve of strength. And there is no narrative problem that Sharma, who is making his directorial debut here, can’t solve with a montage, or with the help of an overbearing background score.

Gunjan Saxena - The Kargil Girl spares us the spectacle of ungainly chest-thumping. What it gives us instead, and without too much showy flapping of the wings, is a good old touching tale of a girl who dared to break free from her cage and fly away - a heroine we can cheer without resorting to a blood-curdling war cry.

On the whole, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl is a box-office winner, a hit! It would have shone at the box-office, had it been premiered in the cinemas. On the Netflix streaming platform too, it will win plaudits for its script, direction and performances. Patriotism and family emotions will be its scoring points.

Here’s the deal. Everything about Gunjan Saxena, India’s first female combat pilot who emerged a trooper in the Kargil War after battling stereotypes and biases, is stirring enough to warrant a Bollywood biopic. After all, what’s not to love about a spirited young girl who yearns to be a pilot right from her childhood and fights to see her dreams soar along with her doting dad, her biggest cheerleader?

Gunjan Saxena is heart-touching not for its patriotism but for its feminism and who better than a father to portray one?! Watch it for the correct portrayal of a feminist father and yes, they do exist!

Wait, is this the first desi film (ever) centred on the female lead, while there is no allusion, let alone presence of a male love-interest (or 'significant other', as they call it) — all through? Statisticians, who keep score — and there should be such folk for cinema as there are in sport — should know better. I mean, there is a moment where the young heroine, as it were, mentions something to the effect of wanting to get married. But that's just a stray remark, coming off her volition, and something her dad vehemently opposes.

A biopic on India’s first female Shaurya Chakra recipient, Kargil war veteran and Indian Air Force officer, would naturally be a story of incredible valour. But this one also carves a fine portrait of a girl coming into her own, who’s sometimes fearful of the unknown, and yet doesn’t buckle under the unreasonable gender-based discrimination prevalent in the armed forces.

Sharan Sharma's Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl may seem like a straightforward true story about a young woman's triumph in a male-dominated space. But in this cleverly layered film, the joy of discovering a trailblazer's inspiring history lies beyond the obvious.

When helming a film about a story that's already known to all, the result lies in how the story is narrated.  The film is about her dream, aspirations and how she had to fight her family, society, sexism, misogyny, and patriarchy to reach where she is. But throughout, the makers keep the track one dimensional and let the message in its own sweet time. This one-dimension approach, however, might not work as well for all the viewers. All in all, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl makes for an inspiring watch with a memorable performance by the supremely talented, Tripathi.
