Sushant Singh Rajput in Dil Bechara as Manny is an extension to his real-life persona. Manny is witty, smart, introspective, and most importantly emotional, cheeky but never over the top. Sadly, Dil Bechara is Sushant Singh Rajput's swan song, however, his performance in the film will be remembered and revered by his fans for years to come.

While Sushant Singh Rajput, of course, will take most of all reviews, Sanjana Sanghi makes a cracker of a debut with Dil Bechara. Sanjana, along with Swastika and Saswata, both well-known Bengali (and Hindi too) names, fit in this perfect little middle-class Bengali family in Jamshedpur. Sanjana brings out the vulnerability of a person who has to live with the knowledge of death. And then there is Manny, who laughs in the face of this inevitability. Because death will come when it has to. Doesn't mean we stop living, right?

I bet not just Sushant fans but anyone watching the film will find it difficult to hold back their tears as the actor nails every scene with perfection. The last 20 minutes is really heart-breaking & might leave your tissue box empty. Director Mukesh Chabra too has done a wonderful job in his first film, and it’s really unfortunate that he won’t get a chance to thank his hero for his brilliant job.

'Dil Bechara', a remake of 'The Fault In Our Stars', is full of life and Sushant teaches us how to live life. Yes, the pain is unbearable. You'll be emotional, but watch it for Sushant and hence, a rating for 'Dil Bechara' won't do justice to the film.

Even though the film’s spirit and breezy pace triumphs, the melancholy that augurs it, will leave you in a puddle of emotions and with a heavy lump in your throat as the end credits roll. ‘Dil Bechara’ will always be remembered as Sushant Singh Rajput’s swan song. Watch this movie simply to witness Sushant Singh Rajput’s last act. A brilliant one at that.

On the whole, Dil Bechara is a dull fare. In normal circumstances, the film would have not been able to do well in the cinemas, but Sushant Singh Rajput’s recent suicide and the consequent public sentiments for the late actor will ensure that a lot of people watch the film on the streaming platform (Disney+ Hotstar) on which it has been released.

The film’s message of laughing in the face of death is bittersweet and poignant. A dialogue about suicide actually made me wince. I would, however, prefer to remember Dil Bechara for Sushant telling the world, “Janam kab lena hai aur marna kab hai yeh hum decide nehi kar sakte, lekin kaise jeena hai woh toh hum decide kar sakte hai”. It is this message of hope I intend to take away from the film.

Dil Bechara is not just a film. It is equal parts dirge, and catharsis. You see Sushant, and the film recedes, and you want to reach out and freeze the frame. He was there, and he isn’t here. I brush back a tear.

The film relies in montages and is talkative. Expectations are managed with cinematography and music works terrifically as supplement. All in all, overlooking comparisons, the film does falter in engaging beyond a time but since it’s shorter by at least 20 minutes than the original, it doesn’t let the hook weaken.

This story itself is borrowed from the super-hit The Fault In Our Stars (2014), based on a John Greene novel of the same name. Maybe for the local flavour/connect, which will always draw desis in, in ways that Hollywood can't—this one feels altogether softer, and perhaps more "bhaalo; shotti"!

There’s something inherently disingenuous about those films where a terminally-ill patient flaunts an excessively voracious appetite for life. From Rajesh Khanna (Anand) to Shah Rukh Khan (Kal Ho Na Ho), a range of actors have essayed similar characters with varying success. But Rajput brings a distinguished sincerity in his portrayal and conveys his Manny’s mind and heart with revel and regret.

13. Khaleej Times -

Rating Score -> 3/5
In a nutshell, Dil Bechara looked promising with its advantage of a saleable imported story material, plus good acting and songs, besides the overwhelming memory of Sushant Singh Rajput that makes every frame seem just that much more special. Yet, the original storyline is lost in translation as the makers resort to mindless rehashing. Somewhere, you feel Sushant should have had a superior final bow.

But that sweet, unfeigned air about Sanjana Sanghi and Sushant's willingness to submit himself to Manny's idealism and bravado helps Dil Bechara to hold the fort. If his moment of breakdown is heartbreaking to look at, his suggestion for closure is deeply appreciated.

Coming to performances, Sushant puts his best foot forward and makes a solid impact. His chemistry with his leading lady is quite crackling, to say the least. ‘Anni’ also hits it out of the park in a crucial scene, which highlights his character’s struggles. Sanjana Sanghi is arguably the find of the year and impresses with her effortless performance. She has a good screen presence and does justice to a character that is anything but simple.

Dil Bechara, which premiered on Disney+Hotstar on Friday, is a few notches shy of the benchmark that Sushant Singh Rajput set for himself with his more accomplished films. But watch it nonetheless to celebrate a career that merited a much, much longer run.

Sushant is in his top form here. He possibly never played a humorous character with such ease in his seven-year-old career. In emotional scenes, it goes without saying, the man is terrific – a performer par excellence. Sanjana makes a sparkling debut. She lights up every frame she appears in. With her stellar act, she makes you feel her deep suffering. Sahil Vaid, Saswata Chatterjee and Swastika Mukherjee have done remarkable jobs.
