Anubhav Sinha makes a strong statement yet again. #Thappad asks uncomfortable questions, his best work so far... #Taapsee spectacular, even her silence speaks volumes. #PavailGulati terrific... Must watch! #ThappadReview

To sum it up, 'Thappad' is a silent slap on our society's age-old belief that — shaadi mein sab kuch chalta hain. But honestly, should it be that way? And that is what we need to start talking about... now!

Sinha, who’s taken to socially-relevant cinema in recent years (Mulk, Article 15), picks a subject that’s prevalent yet largely invisible in society. His almost-objective approach to narrating this story, which doesn’t vilify the perp or beg empathy for the victim, keeps one tentative, concerned, enraged and hopeful through the proceedings.

But there is not a shred of doubt that Sinha has made an important, crucial film, which shows up centuries of male entitlement for what it is. And how all it takes, from a woman who just wants self-respect, is a decision to say no, Not Even One Slap.

Male entitlement -- often served on a platter to the men by the women -- is not new to either Indian society or cinema. The 141-minute rigmarole of 'Thappad' is -- for it hits you hard in your face, in your heart, in your mind....and everywhere else. It questions you. And answers those questions itself. Watch 'Thappad' -- just watch it -- with your family, with your husband, with your father...with the women in your family... Make them think, and cry; make them squirm in their seat.

Going back to the all-essential, anticipated Thappad. It's what the film revolves on, yes. But it occurs with hardly the sense of occasion you'd accord such a moment. It's like that scene from Shoojit Sircar's October, when the girl casually falls off that ledge, but the whole film is about it. It's a thappad. Just. A thappad. Or as the film's tagline says, "Bas itni si baat?" Well that is the whole point, isn't it?

‘Thappad’ is a definite MUST WATCH. Watch it not just for Taapsee Pannu. Watch it not just for the fantastic writing and direction by Anubhav Sinha and Mrunmayee Lagoo. Watch it because it has a slice of your own life. Watch it because of the impactful social drama it is, which simply questions the unsaid rules of marriage.

Thappad suffers from a soft belly – post-interval, the second hour sags for a stretch. But the film recovers its grip in a masterful puja sequence in which Amrita bares her heart. I can guarantee that this scene will make you cry. Because Thappad isn’t just about Amrita or Vikram. It indicts all of us. This film compels us to question our complicity. Which is the first step to change. I strongly recommend that you see Thappad.

I don't know if Thappad will put a dent on male entitlement, inspire men to behave better or uproot patriarchy. It may not change anything at all but even if it convinces women to walk out of toxic relationships, it will be half a battle won.

"Iss baar kamaunga tujhe," says Vikram in the last scene. The camera pans out with visuals of two cars driving away in opposite directions. Even though it might appear a bit wishful, we thought it was apt. Did Anubhav just reduce love to a currency? No, he didn’t. But earn it, you must.

I’m going with four out of five for Thappad. It’s a hard subject to pull off, but Anubhav Sinha achieves it with first-rate storytelling. The best films inspire dialogue, they set you thinking; they can even lead to change. This one made me uncomfortable; it made me question myself and I think it will make you too. It’s essential viewing.

Thappad, in the end is NOT a movie about domestic violence - it is an uncomfortable journey into a woman's heart and emotions to learn why she stands up for herself when confronted with a slap. A must-watch for those who enjoy strong female-driven stories, backed by excellent acting.

In Anurag Kashyap’s words (after the screening), the makers didn’t try to be too clever with the plot, which is what works best in the second half. The writing, screenplay and performances compliment each other really well. It’s definitely a film that you must not miss at any cost. Watch it with your parents, spouse, friends, whoever it is that you want to go for movies with.
