While the film’s runtime is short, the pace seems exhausting because most of the scenes are concluded abruptly, leaving you waiting for the big reveal. However, the all-important backstory isn’t convincing enough to make your wait worth it. For a horror film, ‘Bhoot Part One The Haunted Ship’ falls short of sending chills down your spine. At best, it can give you a few spooks.

Prithvi, who has rescued some girls from being smuggled in a container even as we are still settling into our seats, is asked by Riyaz if he is a Superman, Spider-man or Batman. Singh’s inspirations clearly lie elsewhere (think Shining, multiple times over). Plus, were any of those superheroes equipped with a machine that started beeping crazily in the presence of ghosts?

'Bhoot The Haunted Ship', overall, makes up for the lost points too -- as it fully exploits the lump-in-the-stomach feeling -- while delivering what it intially promised. It's not a scarefest, but is a pretty engaging. It also is one of the better-made horror movies in Indian cinema, and it deserves a dekko especially for that. Watch 'Bhoot' for Vicky Kaushal's stellar act, and a well-rounded psycological-cum-horror drama presented by a prominent production house -- a rarity in the Hindi film industry.

Director Bhanu Pratap Singh has its golden moments, but doesn’t come together as a whole. It’s patchy when it comes to thrills, but it doesn’t bore you to death either. And my real fear? The movie ends with a teaser to its sequel and that’s what is truly scary. Do you really need to have a second instalment when the first isn’t always spine-chilling.

Bhoot in the end leaves a lot more questions unanswered and leaves you with a feeling of incompleteness. The explanation for that though is there in the title itself - Part One - which means that there is a second part to follow soon to tie up all the loose ends. Whether Vicky Kaushal's charisma alone is enough to lead audiences back to the theatres for a second round remains to be seen. If you are a fan of the horror genre, you may find bits and piece to keep you hooked. Technically, the movie is a visual delight, specially the scenes set within the dilapidated ship, but sadly the plot doesn't keep the same pace and that proves a bit of a let down.

The power of a classic horror film lies in how it utilises its silences and renders one sensitive to every sound. Bhoot: Part One - The Haunted Ship manages to intermittently hold one’s attention and engineers terrifying situations, but
fails to keep up throughout its runtime.

Click this link for detailsEventually, everything boils down to two or three quick scenes — with top-notch sound and production design — where you can hear audiences laugh. And that's a great news. Those are nervous laughs. Nobody laughs at a horror film. Ever. The loudest ones are in fact the biggest believers.

#Bhoot: DULL.
Rating: Medium star½
Fails to live up to its title... Weak writing... Lethargic pace... Few scares... Exhausting second half... Unconvincing backstory... #VickyKaushal is the only plus here. #BhootReview
